Over the last few years, Mixed Martial Arts events and leagues such as UFC and Pride FC have become increasingly popular. The national sport of Thailand, Muay Thai, has become very popular amongst MMA fighters since it's exposure to the US and UK. However, many often forget the advantages and benefits Muay Thai can bring to everyone.
Originally developed for combat, both offensive and defensive, Muay Thai has now reached a much broader purpose and evolved into a sport as well as an art. Many people perceive the sport as being brutal, however there is a lot more to Muay Thai than meets the eye. There are spiritual aspects to the art, and respect for others is encouraged.
It can be extremely rewarding, both physically and mentally to join a Muay Thai gym. The workout is no ordinary workout. Every gym trains students differently, so it is always important when looking for a gym to find one that will benefit you and help reach your goals. Do you want to learn Muay Thai for self-defence? Many gyms train students to compete and fight. Perhaps you simply wish to train Muay Thai as an aerobic class to get fit.
It is always recommended to join a school that welcomes amateurs and new students however. It is very important to feel welcome, since it will discourage new students if they are thrown in at a deep end. Taking Muay Thai step-by-step, you will enjoy it and begin to notice changes in your body. Your endurance and stamina will become more efficient. Your physical strength and speed will increase. There are also many techniques to learn - kicks, punches, elbows and knees. It will require much consistency and practice, however the reward is great.
Even if your goals do not involve competing or fighting, there is still a benefit of learning the techniques of Muay Thai. Eventually you will be asked to spar with another student, and these techniques will assist you greatly when sparring. The chance of injury will be reduced, and sparring can definitely be enjoyable.
The difference between Muay Thai and some physical activities and exercises it that it welcomes anyone and everyone. Gender, age, weight and height are no issues. It is an excellent way of getting all round physically fit. It is something different to try, and makes a change from running endlessly on a treadmill, or perhaps lifting weights in a gym - activities which can get very repetitive. It's definitely worth trying - so have a look where your local Gym is, give them a call and learn the art of Muay Thai. You won't be disappointed!
